Each year during Miami Art Week, Goldman Global Arts invites artists from across the world to paint at their famed Wynwood Walls. December 2019 marked their 10 year anniversary, and Ernesto was excited to paint his mural Sentries.

Ernesto’s mural depicts a wolf and peacock, which have deep roots in folklore and storytelling in several different cultures over time.

While the animals seem entirely different, their juxtaposition actually shows they represent similar virtues. The wolf symbolized physical protection, guardianship, loyalty, trust and instinctive behavior. The peacock represents spiritual protection, luck, guidance, and watchfulness. In ancient mythology, the “eyes” on its tail have deepened its connection to these ideas. Together, the wolf and peacock show us that entirely different animals can offer the same beauty and virtues that connect us all to nature.

Ernesto reimagined the mural Sentries for his 2020 canvas Led Home, which also incorporates a wolf and peacock. Led Home was on view at Goldman Global Arts.
